ElderHealth Benefits from United Way Day of Caring
The United Way of King County’s Day of Caring on September 16 was a great success! Clients enjoyed the festive atmosphere and the opportunity to interact with caring community members. Thanks to volunteers from these businesses for giving their time and talents on these projects:

• Microsoft: Casino Day at our Downtown Seattle adult day health center and Treasure Hunt at our South Seattle location.

• Washington Mutual: Casino Day at our North Seattle adult day health center and a ‘50s theme party at our Renton location.

• Sprague Israel Giles: A gardening project at Gaffney House, our supported living home on Capitol Hill. The group wasn’t afraid to get a little dirty as they installed new plants to give the lawn an autumn face lift.

ElderHealth Joins Evercare Premier Plan
This fall, ElderHealth Northwest joined Evercare’s Premier health plan. This product is offered to residents of King and Pierce counties who are over age 65, and eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid.

The plan includes coverage for services such as those offered by ElderHealth Northwest: adult day and in-home services, and supported living at Buchanan Place.

Besides Evercare Premier, other funding options for ElderHealth Northwest clients include Medicaid (CNP, MPC and COPES), Respite Program, Veterans Administration, sliding scale, private insurance, and private pay.

Special features of Evercare Premier include case management by nurse practitioners, an emphasis on community-based care, and a network comprised of quality providers throughout the region.

Nora Gibson, executive director of ElderHealth Northwest, says, “This product integrates care across both the acute primary care and long term care systems. Integrated service models like those offered by Evercare and Providence ElderPlace are hopefully the wave of the future.”

For more information, call Evercare’s Washington office at (866) 266-0636, or Susan Christ, community account manager, at (206) 749-4354.

Senior Citizens’ Lobby Explores Critical Issues for an Aging Society
Critical Issues for an Aging Society
Friday, October 21, 2005, 9:00am – 3:45pm
Hilton Seattle Airport Hotel and Conference Center

Washington has a progressive health care safety net that provides medical care, mental health and long-term care for Medicaid eligible persons and the innovative Basic Health Plan for low-income working people. Others have health coverage through an employer or union sponsored health plan. But these programs do not help many middle and higher income persons who are unable to find or afford private health insurance. Spiraling health care and prescription drug costs combined with an increasingly critical budget crisis undermine efforts to maintain these programs at current levels.

Solutions to this crisis will be explored at the 17th Annual Conference of the Washington State Senior Citizens’ Lobby.

In the morning Governor Christine Gregoire will share her position on health care problems facing residents of our state. Aaron Katz of the University of Washington’s School of Public Health will provide an outline for a solution to this problem. Mr. Katz will be followed by a panel that will discuss perspectives and challenges related to reform of the health care system.

During lunch, Senator Patty Murray will give us her perspective on health care on a national level as well as changes to Medicare and Social Security currently under consideration in Congress.

The afternoon will be devoted to steps we can take as individuals to maintain control of our lives to the very end and a workshop on the upcoming White House Conference on Aging.

Remembering Eileen Murphy (1950 – 2005)
On Sept. 7, 2005, Eileen Murphy, vice president of information services with Senior Services of Seattle/King County, died from a heart attack.

Eileen worked at Senior Services of King County since 1979, and she was the force behind the Senior Information & Assistance database, a tool used by the agency’s telephone advocates to help seniors and their families locate services. Senior I&A may be reached at (888) 435-3377.

Eileen also offered “gatekeeper” trainings to ElderHealth and many other agencies, helping members of the community watch out for older, isolated residents who may need assistance.

Lisa Conley, Director of ElderHealth Consultants, says “Eileen was a mainstay in the aging services community for a very long time and was a tremendous advocate for older adults. She is greatly missed.”
