Nora's Corner: Making the Invisible Visible
by Nora Gibson, Executive Director

My son Will called me yesterday to tell me about something that happened on his job. He just graduated from college (Honors in Sociology, pardon my small bragging moment) and is working as a security person on Portland’s light rail system. The other night he was checking the cars of the train when he came upon a man who had apparently passed out while drinking. He recognized the man as a transient he’d seen on the downtown streets. Unable to rouse the man, Will called the police, who checked the man’s pockets and opened his backpack, which seemed to contain all of his life’s possessions. At this point in the story, my son became so choked up that he could hardly speak; he said they pulled out a number of toy stuffed animals that the man carried with him.

Will told me he felt overwhelmingly sad: for the man, his life, his current situation. That these stuffed animals were so important to him just broke his heart. Seeing the stuffed animals brought someone’s humanity to life, allowing Will to glimpse the complexity of a man’s life and feel for him as another human being. We all sometimes distance ourselves from the transients on the streets, and that sometimes means not seeing them as human like us. We make them “invisible” and we overlook them. As I spoke to Will, I realized that even the “transient” label is a way of distancing.

When we see a very frail old person slumped in a wheelchair, particularly if they can’t speak or suffer from a dementia, we also tend to distance ourselves. . . .

ElderHealth Northwest Employee Auctions Wedding Ring for a Cause
Carla Schneider has passions that extend beyond caring for elders at ElderHealth Northwest’s Buchanan Place, where she is employed as assistant manager. One of those passions is seeking an end to world hunger. In years past, she’s let her coworkers know about her fundraising efforts for Heifer International, a non-profit organization which works to end hunger and poverty by providing livestock and training to small-scale farmers and communities around the world.

Recently, Carla was thinking about a troubling statistic: one child dies every five seconds due to hunger. Carla resolved to continue her family’s commitment to ending hunger and made a decision worth its weight in gold: she would auction off her diamond wedding ring and endow the proceeds to the Heifer Foundation.

This generous and unusual donation has garnered local and national media interest, helping bring awareness to issues related to hunger. “I want to do more than contribute financially,” Carla says, “and through Hope Equity [a Heifer Foundation initiative] you can track a donation and see its results. Whoever wins my ring also designates where the money is spent. I can’t wait to see where it goes!”

The on-line auction ends November 10, 2007. For the ebay auction site, click on the picture at right. To learn more about Carla's story, follow the link below.

ElderFriends Volunteers Deliver Thanksgiving Cheer
For many seniors living alone without support from family and friends, loneliness can be especially poignant on holidays. To brighten up Thanksgiving for those who are isolated, ElderFriends volunteers will deliver meals and spend an hour visiting with seniors in their homes on Thanksgiving Day from 9:30 to 11:30 am.

Volunteers will meet on Thursday, November 22 at 9:30am to receive a brief orientation and pick up the Thanksgiving goodies. Deliveries to our elder friends will include full-course turkey dinners prepared by the Millionair Club Charity, pie from Whole Foods, fresh juices, individually wrapped roses from Ballard Blossom, and colorful place mats made by children from The Bertschi School.

Upon delivery of the meal to the home of the participating ElderFriend, volunteers spend about an hour visiting with an elder who would otherwise be alone.

Volunteers must pre-register. Contact Ginger Seybold at (206) 224-3790 or gingers@elderhealth.org.

You can also help by donating turkeys to the Millionair Club: contact (206) 957-3855 or brenth@millionairclub.org. To support this event with a monetary donation, follow the link below.

Plant a Giving Tree in Your Workplace!
Each holiday season donors from local businesses and congregations provide individual gifts for our adult day health participants and supported living residents. For many, the gifts they receive at our parties are the highlight of their holiday season.

Our programs have grown tremendously in the past few yeas and we are in need of new donors in King and Snohomish Counties. You can help by starting a giving tree at your office or you can donate individually from our wish list that includes both large and small items needed by our programs. Here’s a sampling:

• Blender and muffin pans for Buchanan Place
• Set of pots and pans and an 8 inch chef’s knife for South Seattle adult day health
• Stereo and playing cards for Downtown Seattle adult day health
• Digital camera and puzzles for North Seattle adult day health
• Sweatpants (size L and XL) and art supplies – all locations

Share in the joy of the holiday season at ElderHealth Northwest! Volunteers are needed to cultivate giving trees and work on other projects. Contact Ginger Seybold at (206) 224-3790 or gingers@elderhealth.org.
